John H. Culbertson, Jr., M.D.
1951 - 2013
John “Jack” Culbertson died tragically in a private plane crash in North Georgia on December 2, 2013. Dr. Culbertson, an Associate Professor in the Division of Plastic Surgery at Emory University joined the faculty in 1986. He was the Chief of Plastic Surgery at Emory University Midtown Hospital and served as Director of Plastic Surgery Services at Grady Memorial Hospital for over two decades. He was an integral part of the resident education program and was dedicated to training the next generation of plastic surgeons. During his tenure, he won numerous teaching awards. Jack took residents with him to work at the Shiprock Northern Navajo Medical Center in New Mexico. It was a highlight of resident education and he received an Outstanding Health Care Provider Award from the director of the Navajo Area Indian Health Service in 1997.
His family wrote, "Jack was a teacher in all aspects of life, sharing his knowledge and passion for the world with his friends and family. His sense of adventure was contagious to those closest to him, cultivating a wonder of the world and a desire to see and learn from all experiences." He is survived by his wife Elizabeth; mother Grace Culbertson of Morristown NJ, 2 daughters, Kirby Culbertson of Hartford, Conn., Katherine Culbertson of Atlanta; and a son John "Jake" Culbertson III of Charleston, SC
