President’s Message
Bahman Guyuron, MD
Bahman Guyuron, MD
I am looking forward to seeing all of you at the upcoming AAPS Annual Meeting in San Antonio. This year’s meeting promises to provide an exceptional scientific program along with great opportunities to visit with your colleagues. The Aesthetic Symposium kicks off the program on Saturday and continues through Sunday morning.

I would like to remind you that several ceremonies, including the introduction of new members, awards presentations, and the Murray Lecturer, traditionally held on Monday morning, will now be held on Sunday afternoon. We hope you have modified your travel schedule to arrive in time to attend.

Since we made these changes to the format of the program, we are extremely excited to be able to include more abstracts (42 vs. 33 in 2009) and an additional panel presentation. In addition to the AACPS Panel on Mentoring, this year’s program will include a panel on health care reform and another panel on fat injection. Please take a few moments to review this issue of the newsletter for additional highlights of the meeting and details on the social program.

The AAPS is also pleased to announce that we have established 2 new Awards – the Clinical and Basic Science Researchers of the Year. You should already have received an email from the AAPS Administrative office to vote for your selection to receive the 2010 Clinical and Basic Science Researchers of the Year. The winners will be announced during the 2010 Annual Meeting.

Development of Research Projects
In an effort to create future research priorities, we are asking all AAPS members to identify the top 2 unresolved plastic surgery problems. Based on your responses, we will compile a master list and the list will be posted on the website for members, residents and medical students to refer to when they are searching for research projects. From this list, one Clinical and one Basic Science project will be funded through support from one of our industry partners. Click here to enter your top 2 unresolved plastic surgery problems.

About the Westin LaCantera Resort
Westin LaCantera Resort

Dear AAPS Members:

As your Local Arrangements Chairs, Bill and I are very excited to invite you to the 89th Annual Meeting of the American Association of Plastic Surgeons, being held March 20-23, 2010, in San Antonio, Texas. Hosting our meeting will be the lovely Westin La Cantera Resort. I have had the opportunity to attend several professional meetings at this venue, and I greatly look forward to enjoying this wonderful resort once more.

The Westin La Cantera is located in Northwest San Antonio, approximately 15 miles from the downtown Central Business District and historic Riverwalk, and adjacent to the Six Flags Fiesta Texas Theme Park and the new 1.3 million square foot shopping destination, The Shops at La Cantera. I strongly recommend that you make your hotel reservations at our host hotel, the Westin La Cantera, rather than a downtown San Antonio hotel, to eliminate any concern of travel time between your hotel and the meeting venue. In addition, the Westin La Cantera is a beautiful location offering multiple dining, spa and recreational options all on the same property.

San Antonio embodies the spirit of the Lone Star State as a cosmopolitan city that blends a diversity of cultures and traditions. The Westin La Cantera is representative of this rich history, projecting a style dubbed by architects as "Texas Colonial." In building the magnificent resort, designers researched native textiles, artwork and color palates for inspiration for many aspects of the resort: The Esparza Library was named for the only Alamo defender given a Christian burial by Santa Ana; Francesca’s at Sunset derived it’s name from a moving story about lost lovers; the ceiling of Steinheimer’s Lounge features a hand-painted map showing the location of legendary buried gold; and Tio’s Lobby Lounge recreates the feeling of the main entrance to King Ranch-at one time the largest of its kind in the U.S.

In addition to a rich history, the Resort includes every modern amenity and activity including six pools, the Castle Rock Health Club & Spa, two spectacular golf courses, five distinctive dining experiences, nature walks and trails, and the Westin Kids Club. Visit resort website. This is a wonderful venue which not only offers Association members the opportunity for education and collegial interaction, but serves as a perfect spot to bring your families to enjoy a week in the warm Texas sunshine. Chris and Cynthia Pederson are putting together a list of local shops and restaurants which I will forward to you.

Dr. Arun Gosain and the Program Committee have been working hard to put together a very exciting scientific program. In addition to the AACPS Panel on Mentoring, they have added two panels; one on Health Care Reform and one on Fat Grafting. Also, in an effort to increase the number of scientific papers presented, the Opening Ceremonies have been moved back to Sunday afternoon, March 21, 2010, from 4:00 – 6:30 pm followed by the Welcome Reception. This will allow our attendees to move from the traditional AAPS Opening Ceremonies, including welcoming the Association’s new members, right into a wonderful and relaxing social event.

Our social events continue with a Poster Reception on Monday evening, and then the traditional President’s Reception and Dinner Dance on Tuesday. For the sports minded, the resort is offering coordination of tee times for golf, reservations for tennis, and of course, the Association’s traditional 5K Run.

I look forward to seeing you in San Antonio next month.

Best regards,

Linda and Bill Phillips
Chris and Cynthia Pederson
